Designer Lisa Stagg and her husband, Paul, build an inviting home to welcome friends and family
When a Realtor approached interior designer Lisa Stagg and her husband, Paul, with a client interested in purchasing their North Little Rock home of two decades, the answer was a polite no. However, wanting to give their friend the benefit of showing the house, they agreed and received an offer that same night. “We thought, We don’t want to move; we’re not going to do that,” Lisa recalls. As the client continued to send offers over the next few weeks, Paul said, Why not? “I had always wanted to build, and we thought this was our chance,” Lisa says.

After decades in the Pacific Northwest, a couple starts putting roots back down in their hometown of Wynne
Home had been calling for Kimberly and Tanton Gibbs for a while. Originally from Wynne, Tanton’s career took the high school sweethearts to Seattle in 2008. Over the years, they stayed close to loved ones in Arkansas, and recently they had been toying with the idea of migrating back to the South—at least part time. “We decided in 2021 we would buy a house in Wynne,” Kimberly says, noting that the second residence would allow them their own space while visiting family. “After the pandemic Tanton’s job went fully remote, so we could stay longer lengths of time,” she adds.

A heartfelt renovation fuses function and beauty in Anna E. Cottrell’s Fayetteville home
Slowly, thoughtfully, and with intention: That’s the approach Anna E. Cottrell has taken redoing the midcentury modern abode she purchased 10 years ago. Drawn to the home’s natural light and architecture, she was enamored from the first time she stepped foot inside. “The whole vibe was very cool, very effortless,” she says. “And it’s nestled up on a hillside so it feels private, but I’m close to everything in town.”
Over the past decade, Anna added personal touches to the home (one rendition can be seen in the October 2016 issue of At Home in Arkansas); however, she stopped short of full-scale renovations in the kitchen and bathrooms, which had been largely untouched since the home’s 1961 construction. “When I got the house, my Realtor was like, don’t do a lot of small projects. Wait and do a proper remodel when you’re ready,” she recalls. So for years she lived with the older home’s quirks, including laundry appliances located in the kitchen, chopped-up countertops, and a shallow tub in her primary bath. Deciding it was finally time to remedy some of these features, she wanted to get it right—which meant finding an interior designer to help direct her decisions.

A new-to-the-area family calls on Harper Howey Interiors to personalize their home’s design
Century-old architecture, layered furnishings, and an evolved-over time aesthetic were just a few of the things this couple loved about their former Minneapolis home. However, upon relocating to Northwest Arkansas, the lure of a rural neighborhood and family friendly layout led them to a more contemporary residence. Confident they could make the house feel like home for them and their two daughters, they made an offer.

A South Arkansas fixer-upper becomes a happy first home at the hands of designer Jeremy Carter
Location, location, location—that’s about all this Monticello home had going for it when Halley Ryburn-Powell first considered calling it her own. Having recently moved back to her hometown, she found the house hunt to be more challenging than expected. Eventually her dad had an idea: “When I couldn’t find anything,” she says, “my dad came to me and said, What about the house next to us?” Sure enough, the rental property next door to her parents was available for purchase. “Of all the times I passed this house, I never imagined I would end up living here,” says Halley, who now shares the home with her husband, Johnathan.
Built in 1951, the house lacked the amenities and flow of modern living, not to mention the personal touches that would help Halley feel at home. Enter Jeremy Carter, a Little Rock-based interior designer who has become a friend of the family in recent years. Jeremy got straight to work on a renovation that touched every surface—from a new roof and refinished hardwood flooring to the addition of a back entrance, garage, and laundry room. “The only rooms that are in the same spots as before are the living, dining, and the kitchen, kind of,” Jeremy says. “We also reworked the staircase to the second floor and all the dormer windows. My goal was really to make it like an English cottage,” he adds.

Studio MH updates a Fayetteville home in a fresh, traditional style to serve a young family
Plans change but personal style remains true. When designer Melissa Hall Simmons’ clients called to say they were pivoting from a new build to a full renovation of an existing property, she was happy to adapt, knowing the principles of the project would stand. “I had reservations about building, but we felt like it was the only option to get the space we needed and style we wanted,” says the homeowner. In search of inspiration for the new house, a scroll through a realty website led her to an intriguing property. “It had a similar layout to what we wanted, and trees and landscaping that would have taken decades to get at the other location; so we went for it and bought the house,” she explains.
