At Home Room of the Week 9.22.09
Since that rain doesn’t seem to be clearing out of the forecast, maybe it’s time to find a cozy armchair and curl up with a good book (or, your latest issue of At Home).

Here’s one room where I could easily spend lots of rainy days, lounging around just steps away from the kitchen (must snack while reading) and enjoying some amazing Ozark Mountains views. It’s the Eureka Springs home of Stan DuBois and Jeff Chapman, owners of the retail store Vintage Cargo. www.vintagecargo.net

Designer Tobi Fairley also has a great blog post this morning on some of her favorite coffee tables.

Here’s one of my favorites. She’s incorporated some good tips too in her posts this week for creating functional yet pretty family rooms.

What do you get when you combine a daring black-and-white pattern with a cheery splash of sunshine yellow (above)? In this case, a Tobi Fairley-designed Glenwood bathroom featured in At Home in Arkansas, which happens to resemble this uptown look from Diane von Furstenberg’s Resort 2009 collection.
More black and white patterns prevailed on the DVF runway (below)Â with juicy citrus orange accents, a color combination Fairley executed beautifully in this vignette, near the same home’s fireplace.

We’re lucky to have tons of bungalow and craftsman-style homes here in Arkansas, nestled into the hills (like Hillcrest in Little Rock) and in the historic districts throughout the state. Here’s an idea for an updated Craftsman kitchen, so you can keep the style but get the benefit of new appliances and a fresh look.
It’s in Dave and Stacy Grundfest’s house in Little Rock. Dave is a contractor himself, so he knows the ins and outs of a remodel. For the full story:

Another rainy day…and I’m thinking about how great the rain would sound if you were in this treehouse at Camp Aldersgate in Little Rock. If you’re not familiar with the camp, it’s just on the edge of the western side of town and has been around for about 60 years, providing a traditional camp experience for children with disabilities.
Added to that wonderful mission is the fact that they have great architecture, courtesy of some talented Arkansas architects. For the past several years, U of A architecture prof Laura Terry has conducted a summer design/build workshop for students, and the result has been some amazing recreational spaces, like the treehouse above, and the archery pavilion below.

And these ribbon wood benches, where kids can get out of their wheelchairs, recline on the bench, and look up at the sky. Bet that’s a great sight.

Click on the link below for a video preview and start making your wish list. https://athomearkansas.com/At-Home-Arkansas/Featured-Video/
ps: just some random trivia–former governor Mike Huckabee was the keynote speaker at the show. Apparently not chosen for his kitchen skills, rather that he’s great at motivating a crowd.

We love a win-win! Inspired by the success of the “Cash for Clunkers” program, the U.S. Department of Energy will launch a “Cash for Appliances” program this fall, providing nearly $300 million in stimulus funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to consumers who purchase new energy-efficient kitchen appliances. We included a roundup of some of the newest products in our Kitchen and Bath issue. Got a clunker in the kitchen? Think about switching out to one of these instead. https://athomearkansas.com/At-Home-Arkansas/September-2009/Ready-Set-Renovate/
