With just two days til Thanksgiving, we’re paying homage today to the KITCHEN, the room about to be the scene of cooking, baking and creating all things yummy. A few of the spaces where we’d be happy to don our aprons and start prepping the turkey:

Today’s Room of the Week is the dining room…in all its variations, from formal to casual to outdoors. Special guest columnist Lorrie LeBeaux, a West Little Rock resident whose passion for wine led to Lorrie’s Wine and Food World, shares with us her recommendations for the ideal glasses, wine and food to pair with these lovely spaces featured in our Kitchen and Bath issue.

This dining room by Meridith Hamilton calls for a glass than can enhance the beauty of this modern space. This lovely Verve flute from Crate & Barrel will surely add sparkle and be quite the conversation piece at the dinner table. The bubbles in the base of the glass mimic the bubbles of the sparkling wine!
For a touch of color, I would pour a glass of Schramsberg 2008 Brut Rose. This wine has a lovely pink hue. The bubbles are small, tight and ongoing in your flute. The aromas are of bright red fruit, like strawberries and watermelon. There are also slight notes of brioche and orange zest. This wine is a great to sip alone, but is a wonderful wine to be paired with food. I would pair it with salmon, chicken, pork or a tangy goat cheese. Or try it with this yummy appetizer recipe.

In this transitional style space by Tobi Fairley, I love the mix of soft, sleek, built-in seating and chairs. This traditional-with-a-twist Edge glass from Crate & Barrel offers a finishing touch, looking great in this room and in anyone’s hand.
A traditional red wine, such as Honig’s 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon, would complement an evening of great conversation around this cozy banquette.

In this sitting area next to a kitchen (designed by Garry Mertins), the side table between the big cushy chairs and ottoman begs for a glass of wine to adorn it! The Nat wine glass by Crate & Barrel would add a bit of interest in this space. And anyone would love to have this glass in their hand with my white wine recommendation!
I would fill this wine glass with 2010 J California Pinot Gris; this wine is so aromatic and refreshing. Check out the full wine review.

I love the relaxed and elegant look of this space, and a wine glass with a bit of color would add that finishing touch to this outdoor eating area. This Lyla wine glass from Crate & Barrel is a lovely shade of green that would add that pop of color.
I would pour Honig 2010 Sauvignon Blanc, Napa Valley in this lovely glass, and enjoy a great meal to salute an end to summer. Check out the complete review.

Room of the Week 1.12.10
The Jan/Feb Color Issue is at the printer, and will be coming to you in the mail and via the web in a few short weeks. Not only is it packed with colorful ideas, but you’ll find our Design Book inside it is as well. The Design Book is meant to be your home design resource guide for 2010, filled with information on the latest trends. So for this week’s favorite room, I thought I’d share a few great spaces we came across while researching trends.

Spicing up the kitchen with COLOR
I think we all agree by this point that most of our families live in the kitchen. And these days, we want a cheery, friendly place to spend all that time. These green cabinets would make my day. As would this blue/green apron-front sink, and the big window to look out while washing up.

Creating a spa-like bath
Kitchens and baths continue to be the most remodeled rooms in the house. In bath re-dos, homeowners are going for amenities like spa baths or soaking tubs, plus soothing colors and textures.

A Colorful Kitchen Before & After 1.11.11
Yesterday I asked our At Home Facebook friends what kinds of blog posts they’d most like to see. Before & Afters were the overwhelming favorite, and color was a close second. Perfect timing for this amazing kitchen makeover, courtesy of homeowners Brent & Anita Sipe in the south Arkansas town of Camden. The Sipe’s have a thing for re-dos, and when they’re not busy running their store, Blann Hardware, they’re making over homes.
The kitchen in their latest home had even these reno pros challenged. But the Sipes had vision, and these color-lovers kept the bones of the room intact, tore out the cabinetry and island, and gave the room a colorful overhaul.
And in the breakfast room, where windows made positioning a table and chairs difficult, 
the Sipes came up with the creative idea of building in a banquette.
Bright blue, bold orange and dashes of dark brown form the room’s color palette, with glass tile for the backsplash and natural maple cabinets. Here’s how the Sipes pulled the colors together:

We love simple. We love thrifty. And for her column this month, Jerusalem Greer’s craft is both! She shows you how to repurpose some of those glass bottles laying around the house (in her case, decanters) as sparkly containers for your cooking oils. Such pretty images too. LOVE!

In many kitchens space is at a premium, but that doesn’t mean you have to crimp on style or creativity, does it? My favorite way to bring character to any kitchen is through unique – but functional- accessories.
Years ago, in our pre-children days, I purchased these decanters at a flea market for my husband, Nathan, who at the time was going through a Rat Pack infatuation, and dreamed of having the kind of well stocked swanky bar that would make Frank Sinatra proud.
Now days, in our small 1940s cottage, space in every room is at a premium (especially with rowdy boys who just keep getting bigger and bigger, despite our pleas to stop growing). To make room for growing kids and visiting friends and family, the bar eventually had to go, along with the huge recliner (no tears were shed by me for that one) and my craft room.
When it came time to pack up the bar, I just couldn’t’t let go of the decanters. Not yet. After all, someday the kids will go to college and leave home (fingers crossed) and maybe then I can take back my craft room and Nathan can restore his bar. Maybe. But for now I have re-purposed these lovely vintage beauties in the kitchen, using them in a way that is both beautiful and functional.
Instead of bourbon and scotch, our vintage decanters hold our Olive Oil, Sunflower Oil and White Vinegar. To prevent unpleasant surprises and culinary disasters, I made simple labels for each jar, using shipping tags, ink and rubber alphabet stamps. The cost of the total project (not including the decanters) was under $5 and took less than half an hour to complete, and added a lovely bit of sparkle to our kitchen in the process.
